SF 23

As sure as the annual summer heatwave that descends on NYC, I recently found myself back in the Bay Area once again for work, and to escape the humidity of the East coast. My last blog post from California was in early 2018, but I’ve been back at least one more time in 2019 before all of my travel halted during the start of the pandemic. I took a few photos during that visit, but couldn’t be bothered to publish them.

That’s a theme that’s continued the past few years and one which I’ve been trying to break out of now that I find myself globetrotting once more. While I did take a handful of photos on a recent trip to Barcelona, I was also lucky enough to to be in Costa Rica last month and didn’t even bring a camera with me. My justification at the time was that I was “too busy” to take photos, but once I arrived I regretted the decision.

So, now that I was headed back out West, I didn’t want to make the same mistake. My work duties were taking me to San Jose, but it was actually more cost-effective to fly into San Francisco a few days early. And since I hadn’t been in the area in more than three years it felt like a great opportunity. While there, I connected with my pal and colleague, Clicky Steve, who was also arriving early and who also hadn’t been in the city for ages. We didn’t have much of an agenda other than to wander about, sample the food and drink, and soak up the California sun.

San Francisco is a city I used to be quite skeptical of because of the inevitable comparisons to New York. These days, I’m mostly indifferent in that I think it’s a great city with envy-inducing proximity to nature, but I’ve also made peace with the fact that I’m a child of the East coast and probably destined to be a life-long denizen of NYC. Nevertheless, visiting SF is always a good time and an even better excuse to get back into the groove of photography (even if I hate all my photos as usual 🙃).
